超度 refers to Buddhist or Taoist rituals performed for the deceased, with the goal of helping their soul escape suffering and achieve a better rebirth. It is almost exclusively used in religious contexts, so the literal English 'surpass' or 'transcend' does not capture its actual use. You will hear it in phrases like 超度亡灵 ('release the soul of the departed').
