Definition
踏 (tà) means 'to step on' or 'to tread' with a deliberate, often heavier action than 踩 (cǎi), which is the everyday word for stepping on something. It also has a distinct sense of 'to investigate on the spot' (踏访), which none of the other siblings share. 蹬 (dēng) focuses on pressing down with the foot (e.g., pedaling) or putting on shoes, while 踹 (chuài) is a forceful kick.
