Definition
过于 is a formal adverb meaning 'excessively' or 'over-', used before multi-character adjectives or verbs (e.g., 过于依赖). It carries a stronger negative tone than 太 (tài), which is more neutral and can be positive; 太 is also used in everyday speech. Unlike 过度 (guòdù, an adjective) or 过头 (guòtóu, a complement), 过于 directly modifies the word that follows.
