都市 (dūshì) refers to a big city or metropolis and is more formal/literary than the everyday word 城市 (chéngshì). It often appears in written or compound terms such as 大都市 'big city' or 都市化 'urbanization'. 都市 implies a large, modern, bustling city, whereas 城市 can refer to any size of city or town.
