Definition
降格 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to lower one's standards or status'. It is used in formal or written contexts. The two syllables 降 and 格 can split when you insert 了, 过, or quantity phrases between them: 降了格 'lowered the standard', 降过一次格 'lowered once'. The object (the standard/status) is inherent in the word itself, so you don't add a separate object; instead, the subject's own standards are implied.
