Definition
音节 is a syllable — a unit of pronunciation with one vowel sound. 声调 (tone) is the pitch pattern carried by that syllable; every syllable has a tone, but the two words refer to different things. Think of 音节 as the sound chunk and 声调 as the melody on it.
