Definition
麻醉 (mázuì) means to anesthetize (medically) or to numb (figuratively, one's mind or feelings). Unlike 腐蚀 (fǔshí 'to corrode, corrupt'), which implies active moral decay, 麻醉 focuses on dulling or deadening sensation to escape reality. The other siblings (堕落, 腐烂, 腐败, 腐朽) all describe degeneration or rot, not the act of numbing.
