Conditions with 要 and 就

The 要…就… pattern sets a decisive condition: 'If you want to do X, then do X (and do it now/well).' It often carries an impatient or no-nonsense tone. Use it to cut off hesitation, but make sure the second verb mirrors the first one.

Structure

要 + Verb + 就 + Verb (+ ...)
conveys impatience or a firm decision

Examples

  • 走,我们不需你。
    Yào zǒu jiù zǒu, wǒmen bù xūyào nǐ.
    If you want to leave, leave. We don't need you.
  • 买,我们快关门了。
    Yào mǎi jiù mǎi, wǒmen kuài guānmén le.
    If you're going to buy it, buy it now. We are about to close the shop.
  • 去,不用等我们。
    Yào qù jiù qù, bùyòng děng wǒmen.
    If you want to go, go now. You don't need to wait for us.
  • 好好学。
    Yào xué jiù hǎohāo xué.
    If you want to study it, study it well.
  • 早点买。
    Yào mǎi jiù zǎodiǎn mǎi.
    If you want to buy it, buy it soon.
