Definition
就 (jiù) is a common adverb with several uses: (1) 'then' after a condition; (2) 'as soon as' in the 一...就... pattern; (3) 'just, exactly, only' for emphasis. Unlike 刚 (gāng) which means 'just a moment ago' (recency), 就 marks immediacy or certainty. In formal writing, 便 (biàn) replaces the 'then' sense.
