Expressing a learned skill with 会

会 is placed before a verb to express that someone knows how to do something, like speaking a language or cooking. It can be used for any learned skill. The negative form is 不会.

Structure

Subj. + 会 + Verb (+ Obj.)
Negate with 不会 before the verb.

Examples

  • 说中文。
    Tā huì shuō Zhōngwén.
    He can speak Chinese.
  • 写汉字。
    Wǒ huì xiě Hànzì.
    I can write Chinese characters.
  • 做饭吗?
    Nǐ huì zuòfàn ma?
    Can you cook food?
  • 唱歌吗?
    Gǒu huì chànggē ma?
    Can dogs sing?
  • 爸爸开车。
    Bàba huì kāichē.
    Dad can drive.
