Expressing "as long as" with 只要

只要 introduces a condition that guarantees the result in the second clause. It pairs with 就 to mean 'as long as... then...'. This pattern expresses a sufficient condition, not a necessary one.

Examples

  • 只要你真的喜欢，我就给你买。
    Zhǐ yào nǐ zhēn de xǐ huan, wǒ jiù gěi nǐ mǎi.
    As long as you really like it, I will buy it for you.
  • 只要你努力学习，就会有进步。
    Zhǐ yào nǐ nǔ lì xué xí, jiù huì yǒu jìn bù.
    As long as you study hard, you'll make progress.
  • 只要有你在，我就放心了。
    Zhǐ yào yǒu nǐ zài, wǒ jiù fàng xīn le.
    As long as you are here, I won't be worried.
  • 只要下雨，她就会心情不好。
    Zhǐ yào xià yǔ, tā jiù huì xīn qíng bù hǎo.
    Whenever it rains, she will be in a bad mood.
  • 只要不堵车，我们就能准时到。
    Zhǐ yào bù dǔ chē, wǒ men jiù néng zhǔn shí dào.
    As long as traffic isn't bad, we can get there on time.
