Expressing "especially" with 格外
格外 means "especially" or "particularly" and intensifies adjectives or psychological verbs (e.g., 想, 小心). The optional particle 地 can be inserted between 格外 and the adjective for added emphasis, but it is often omitted.

Examples
- 下过雨的早晨格外舒服。Xià guo yǔ de zǎochén géwài shūfu.It's especially comfortable on mornings after a rain.
- 去年孩子还很调皮,但是今年格外懂事。Qùnián háizǐ huán hěn tiáopí, dànshì jīnnián géwài dǒngshì.Last year the kid was very naughty, but this year he's been especially sensible.
- 今年的水果格外的甜。Jīnnián de shuǐguǒ géwài de tián.This year's fruit is exceptionally sweet.
- 老师对我们格外热情。Lǎoshī duì wǒmen géwài rèqíng.The teacher is especially warm to us.
- 去不安全的地方旅游,一定要格外小心。Qù bù ānquán de dìfang lǚyóu, yīdìng yào géwài xiǎoxīn.You need to be especially careful when traveling to unsafe places.
