格外 (géwài) is a slightly more formal adverb than 特别 (tèbié) for 'especially, particularly', often used with adjectives to mean 'exceptionally'. Unlike 尤其 (yóuqí), which singles out one item from a group, 格外 emphasizes a degree beyond the ordinary. It is not used as an adjective (unlike 特别).
