Expressing "if… then…" with 假如

假如 ... 就 ... is used for formal or hypothetical 'if... then...' statements. 假如 sets up the condition, and 就 marks the result. Be careful not to omit 就 in the second clause; it is essential for the 'then' meaning.

Examples

  • 假如你的成绩再好一点儿，你就能申请北大了。
    Jiǎ rú nǐ de chéng jì zài hǎo yì diǎn r, nǐ jiù néng shēn qǐng běi dà le.
    If your grades come up a little more, then you can apply to Beijing University.
  • 假如我是你，我就戒烟。
    Jiǎ rú wǒ shì nǐ, wǒ jiù jiè yān.
    If I were you, I would give up smoking.
  • 假如你的女朋友不爱你，你们就分手吧。
    Jiǎ rú nǐ de nǚ péng you bú ài nǐ, nǐ men jiù fēn shǒu ba.
    If your girlfriend doesn't love you, then you should break up.
  • 假如有一点机会，我就会辞去现在的工作。
    Jiǎ rú yǒu yì diǎn jī huì, wǒ jiù huì cí qù xiàn zài de gōng zuò.
    If I just had some other opportunity, I would quit my job.
  • 假如一定要去的话，她就去。
    Jiǎ rú yí dìng yào qù de huà, tā jiù qù.
    If she really must go, then she will go.
