Expressing "if… then…" with 要是

Use 要是...就... to express 'if... then...' in informal Chinese. 要是 introduces a condition, and 就 introduces the result. When the subject comes before 要是, you can shorten 要是 to 要.

Structure

要是 + Subj. + … , 就 + …
Subj. + 要 + … , 就 + …
shortened form when the subject comes first

Examples

  • 要是真想我,给我打电话。
    Nǐ yàoshi zhēn xiǎng wǒ, jiù gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà.
    If you do miss me, then give me a call.
  • 要是我妈知道这件事,我死定了!
    Yàoshi wǒ mā zhīdào zhè jiàn shì, wǒ jiù sǐ dìng le!
    If my mother knew about this, I would be so dead!
  • 要是老板不同意,我们不能跟客户签合同。
    Yàoshi lǎobǎn bù tóngyì, wǒmen jiù bù néng gēn kèhù qiān hétóng.
    If the boss doesn't agree, then we can't sign the contract with the client.
  • 再说,我真生气了。
    Nǐ yào zàishuō, wǒ zhēn shēngqì le.
    If you keep talking that way, I'm really gonna get angry.
  • 不听,我也没办法。
    Tā yào bù tīng, wǒ yě méi bànfǎ.
    If he doesn't listen, there's nothing I can do about it.
