Expressing "if… then…" with 要是

Use 要是...就... to express 'if... then...' in informal Chinese. 要是 introduces a condition, and 就 introduces the result. When the subject comes before 要是, you can shorten 要是 to 要.

Structure

要是 + Subj. + … , 就 + …
Subj. + 要 + … , 就 + …

Examples

  • 要是真想我,给我打电话。
    Nǐ yào shi zhēn xiǎng wǒ, jiù gěi wǒ dǎ diàn huà.
    If you do miss me, then give me a call.
  • 要是我妈知道这件事,我死定了!
    Yào shi wǒ mā zhī dào zhè jiàn shì, wǒ jiù sǐ dìng le!
    If my mother knew about this, I would be so dead!
  • 要是老板不同意,我们不能跟客户签合同。
    Yào shi lǎo bǎn bù tóng yì, wǒ men jiù bù néng gēn kè hù qiān hé tong.
    If the boss doesn't agree, then we can't sign the contract with the client.
  • 再说,我真生气了。
    Nǐ yào zài shuō, wǒ zhēn shēng qì le.
    If you keep talking that way, I'm really gonna get angry.
  • 不听,我也没办法。
    Tā yào bù tīng, wǒ yě méi bàn fǎ.
    If he doesn't listen, there's nothing I can do about it.
