Using 而 to explain contrasting ideas
The pattern 不是…而是… (not… but rather…) uses 而 to sharply contrast two ideas, often to correct a misconception or clarify the truth. The structure 是…而不是… simply reverses the order but functions similarly. While 而 is optional, including it makes the contrast explicit and is highly recommended for clear communication.
Structure

Examples
- 我们是来办事的，而不是来玩的。Wǒmen shì lái bànshì de, ér bù shì lái wán de.We're here to do work, not to have fun.
- 以后后悔的人不是我，而是你自己。Yǐhòu hòuhuǐ de rén bù shì wǒ, ér shì nǐ zìjǐ.The person to later regret this won't be me. It will be you.
- 不好意思，我是不小心，而不是故意的。Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ shì bù xiǎoxīn, ér bù shì gùyì de.I'm sorry. It was an accident. It wasn't on purpose.
- 我不是不想帮你，而是没有能力帮你。Wǒ bù shì bù xiǎng bāng nǐ, ér shì méiyǒu nénglì bāng nǐ.It's not that I don't want to help you, it's that I have no way to help you.
- 重要的不是你的外表，而是你的内心。Zhòngyào de bù shì nǐ de wàibiǎo, ér shì nǐ de nèixīn.What's important is not how you look on the outside, but rather what's on the inside.
