丢失 (diūshī) is a neutral, standard verb meaning 'to lose' physical objects (e.g., a bag, a phone). It is more formal than 丢 (diū), which is the everyday word also meaning 'to discard', and less abstract than 失去 (shīqù), which is used for losing intangible things like hope or a chance.
