Definition
两极 (liǎng jí) refers to the two poles (North and South) or, figuratively, to two opposite extremes (of opinions, values, etc.). It contrasts with 北极 (běi jí), which specifically means only the North Pole or the Arctic region. When speaking of both poles or a pair of opposites, use 两极; for just the North Pole, use 北极.
