从而 (cóng'ér) is a formal, written conjunction meaning 'thus, thereby, as a result.' It connects two clauses where the second is a direct consequence of the first, often used in expository or academic writing. Unlike the everyday 所以 (suǒyǐ), 从而 is rarely used in speech; it is similar to 因此 (yīn cǐ) but emphasizes the resulting action or state more strongly.
