Definition
侦查 (zhēn chá) is a formal verb used specifically for police or judicial investigation of crimes or cases. It focuses on the official investigative process, unlike 侦探 (zhēn tàn) which can mean 'detective' or 'to do detective work' (often amateur), and 查明 (chá míng) which means 'to ascertain' the result of an investigation. It is also distinct from 检测 (technical testing) and 发现 (general discovery).
