Definition
发烧 is the everyday verb for 'have a fever' (of a person). The sibling 烧 is a noun meaning 'fever' and appears in the split form (发了一次烧), but alone it means 'burn/cook'. 发热 is more formal/technical and also means 'get hot' (machines).
