后卫 (hòu wèi) has two distinct senses that are not related in English. In military contexts it refers to the 'rear guard' — the unit that protects the back of an advancing army. In sports, it means 'guard' or 'defender', covering positions in basketball (point guard, shooting guard), soccer (fullback, center-back), and other team sports.
