Definition
嘲笑 is the most general and common verb for 'to mock, ridicule', suitable for both speech and writing. It is stronger and more direct than 笑话 (to laugh at, often dismissively) and less critical than 讽刺 (to satirize with irony). Compared to 取笑 (to tease playfully), 嘲笑 has a more negative, hurtful tone.
