外部 refers to the exterior or external part of something — the outside as a defined portion or aspect, often used in formal or technical contexts (e.g. 外部环境 'external environment'). It contrasts with everyday 外面/外 ('outside' as a location) and 外表 ('outward appearance, facade'). 外部 is the opposite of 内部 (interior).
