Definition
异 is a bound form (cannot stand alone as a word) that appears in compound words to express the concept of 'different', 'strange', 'unusual', 'other', or 'foreign'. Its meaning shifts depending on the compound it forms — for example, 异常 means 'abnormal', 差异 means 'difference', and 异国 means 'foreign country'. You will not use 异 by itself; it always attaches to another character.
