Definition
忌 (jì) has two distinct senses: 'to be jealous of' and 'to avoid/abstain from (sth)'. For jealousy, it is more literary than the everyday 嫉妒 (jí dù). For avoidance, 忌 is broader (health, taboo, habit) while 戒 (jiè) specifically means quitting a habit/addiction, and 忌讳 (jì huì) refers to cultural taboos.
