Definition
接见 (jiē jiàn) means 'to receive (a visitor, especially an official or dignitary)' and is used when the receiver is in a position of authority or the visit is formal. It differs from 接待 (jiē dài), which is more general hospitality (e.g., receiving guests at a hotel), and from 会见 (huì jiàn), which implies a mutual meeting between equals or peers. 拜见 (bài jiàn) is the reverse direction — a junior visiting a senior.
