Definition
提升 (tíshēng) means to lift, promote, or improve — used for physical hoisting, job promotion, and raising abstract qualities. For 'improve', 提高 (tígāo) is more common for concrete increases (price, speed); 提升 is more formal and for abstract things (ability, efficiency). For 'promote', 提升 is transitive (promote someone), while 升 (shēng) is intransitive (rise), and 晋升 (jìnshēng) is a formal synonym for promotion in rank.
