查明 (chá míng) means 'to ascertain through investigation' — it emphasizes the successful result of an inquiry (facts, causes, identities). It is more specific than 确定 (què dìng 'to confirm'), which doesn't require investigation; and unlike 侦查 (zhēn chá, criminal) or 查处 (chá chǔ, with handling), 查明 focuses on discovering the truth without further action.
