Definition
消沉 describes a passive, long-lasting state of low spirits after disappointment or failure, like losing motivation. Compared to momentary 沮丧 (dejected from a setback) or 郁闷 (frustrated by a situation), 消沉 is deeper and more prolonged; it is not the clinical condition 抑郁 nor the temperament 忧郁.
