温度计 (wēn dù jì) is the concrete object 'thermometer' — a tool that measures temperature. Its sibling 温度 (wēn dù) is the abstract concept 'temperature' itself, not the device. Use 温度计 when you mean the instrument, and 温度 when you mean how hot or cold something is.
