Definition
突 is a bound morpheme (b.f.) that never stands alone; it only appears in compound words. Its two main sense groups are (1) 'sudden, abrupt' – in words like 突然 (suddenly) and 突击 (to attack suddenly); and (2) 'to protrude, to stick out' – in words like 突出 (outstanding/to bulge) and 冲突 (conflict, literally 'collide and protrude'). The archaic noun sense 'chimney' is now rarely used.
