罕见 (hǎn jiàn) means 'rare, seldom seen' and is the formal, written word for something that occurs or appears very infrequently (e.g., a disease, natural phenomenon, artifact). It is more formal than the colloquial 少见 (shǎo jiàn) and does not carry the positive 'valuable' nuance that 难得 (nán dé) implies — a negative event can be 罕见 but not 难得.
