而今 is a literary time word meaning 'now' or 'at present', often found in formal writing, news, or classical-style prose. It sounds more serious than 现在 and is rarely used in casual speech. Use it to contrast the present situation with the past or future. Typically placed at the start of a clause or before the verb.
