背后 (bèi hòu) refers to the back side of a person or object (e.g., 山背后). Unlike 后 (hòu) and 后面 (hòu miàn), which are more general for 'behind' in space or time, 背后 also has a figurative meaning: 'behind someone's back' (often negative). 之后 (zhī hòu) is only temporal ('afterwards').
