茱 is rarely used alone in modern Chinese; it almost exclusively appears as part of the compound 茱萸 (zhūyú), a medicinal and ornamental tree (dogwood / cornus). In traditional culture, 茱萸 is associated with the Double Ninth Festival (重阳节), when people would wear its branches to ward off evil. Knowing 茱 helps you recognize 茱萸, but you will not encounter it as an independent word.
