薯 is a bound morpheme (黏着语素) meaning potato, yam, or any tuberous crop. It cannot stand alone as an independent word; it always appears as part of a compound, such as 红薯 (sweet potato), 马铃薯 (potato), 薯条 (french fries), and 薯片 (potato chips). In sentences you will see it only within these compounds.
