Definition
赔钱 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning either 'to pay compensation (money)' or 'to lose money in business'. The verb 赔 and the object 钱 can split: a time, measure, or result phrase goes between them, e.g. 赔了很多钱 ('lost a lot of money'), 赔过一次钱 ('compensated once'). When the focus is on the amount lost or compensated, use the separated form.
