Expressing "no wonder"

To express that something is not surprising given a reason, use 怪不得 or 难怪. They are interchangeable and commonly used in both speech and writing. Remember to include both the reason clause and the observation; omitting the reason makes the sentence incomplete.

  • 小张请假了,怪不得今天没有看到他。
    Xiǎo Zhāng qǐngjià le, guàibude jīntiān méiyǒu kàndào tā.
    Little Zhang asked for vacation time, no wonder I haven't seen him today.
  • 天天迟到,怪不得他被炒鱿鱼了。
    Tiāntiān chídào, guàibude tā bèi chǎoyóuyú le.
    He's late for work every day. No wonder he got fired.
  • 你手机没电了?怪不得我打不通。
    Nǐ shǒujī méi diàn le? Guàibude wǒ dǎ bu tōng.
    Your cell phone is out of power? No wonder my call wouldn't go through.
  • 你放了醋?难怪这么难吃!
    Nǐ fàng le cù? Nánguài zhème nánchī!
    You put vinegar in it? No wonder it tastes so bad!
