Basic comparisons with 比

Use 比 to compare two things, saying one is more adjective than the other. Place the noun that comes out on top first, then 比, the second noun, and a stand-alone adjective — do not add 很.

Structure

Noun 1 + 比 + Noun 2 + Adj.
Do not add 很 before the adjective; the comparison already implies a degree.

Examples

  • 老师聪明。
    Tā bǐ lǎo shī cōng ming.
    He is smarter than the teacher.
  • 上海纽约大吗?
    Shàng hǎi bǐ niǔ yuē dà ma?
    Is Shanghai bigger than New York?
  • 她妈妈漂亮。
    Tā bǐ tā mā ma piào liang.
    She is prettier than her mother.
  • 星巴克的咖啡这里的咖啡贵。
    Xīng bā kè de kā fēi bǐ zhè lǐ de kā fēi guì.
    The coffee at Starbucks is more expensive than the coffee here.
  • 地铁公交车方便。
    Dì tiě bǐ gōng jiāo chē fāng biàn.
    The subway is more convenient than the bus.
