Passive verbs with 受
Use 受 to express passive meaning, like 'to be …ed'. The pattern is 受 + (doer) + verb. It is common in formal or written contexts and often used with specific two-character verbs.
Structure
Subj. + 受 + (Agent) + Verb
The agent (doer) can be omitted, as in 受欢迎 (to be welcomed).
Examples
- 张老师的课很受学生的欢迎。Zhāng lǎo shī de kè hěn shòu xué shēng de huān yíng.Teacher Zhang's lessons are welcomed by the students.
- 一个人不一定要变得很有钱或者很成功才会受人尊重。Yí gè rén bù yí dìng yào biàn de hěn yǒu qián huò zhě hěn chéng gōng cái huì shòu rén zūn zhòng.A person don't have to be rich or successful to be respected.
