公路 (gōnglù) is a paved main road for vehicles, often connecting cities or towns — think 'highway' or 'main road'. Unlike the more general 路 (lù), which can mean any road, path or route, 公路 specifically refers to a public motor road. It's similar in meaning to 道路 (dàolù), but 公路 is more concrete about being a purpose-built vehicular road.
