Definition
媒 is a bound form (b.f.) — you cannot use it as a standalone word. It appears as the first element in compound nouns, most commonly 媒体 (media/medium), 媒介 (intermediary/medium), and 媒人 (matchmaker/go-between). Think of it as the 'mediation' component that connects two parties. The matchmaker sense is traditional (arranged marriages), while the media/medium sense is modern and very common.
