Definition
放水 (fàng shuǐ) is a separable verb (离合词) with two literal meanings — to turn on water and to drain water — and a sports slang meaning of intentionally losing. For the 'drain' sense, 放水 is more everyday and general than 宣泄 (xuān xiè, formal, also emotional venting), and differs from 淋 (lín) which means to drench or pour over.
