Definition
酪 (lào) is a bound morpheme (not used alone) that appears in compound words for various thick, creamy food products. The most common compound is 奶酪 (nǎilào, 'cheese'). It also appears in 果酪 (guǒlào, 'fruit jelly' or 'fruit curd') and 杏仁酪 (xìngrénlào, 'almond paste'). Unlike English 'cheese' or 'jelly', 酪 does not stand alone; you must use it as part of a compound.
