Expressing "compared with" using 跟

Use 跟 + A + 比 (起来) to make a comment about B in comparison to A. The comment can come before or after the comparison phrase. Avoid confusing this with the direct comparison structure using 比 alone, which directly compares attributes.

B + 跟 + A + 比 (起来) ，Comment

Examples

  • 跟上海比，我老家的物价很低。
    Gēn shàng hǎi bǐ, wǒ lǎo jiā de wù jià hěn dī.
    Compared to Shanghai, prices in my hometown are very low.
  • 跟东部比，我更喜欢美国西部。
    Gēn dōng bù bǐ, wǒ gèng xǐ huan měi guó xī bù.
    Compared to the eastern USA, I like the western USA more.
  • 跟他比，你最大的优势是什么？
    Gēn tā bǐ, nǐ zuì dà de yōu shì shì shén me?
    Compared to him, what is your biggest advantage?
  • 妹妹跟姐姐比起来有点害羞。
    Mèi mei gēn jiě jie bǐ qǐ lái yǒu diǎn hài xiū.
    Compared to the older sister, the younger sister is a bit shy.
  • 新版本跟旧版本比起来，多了一些功能。
    Xīn bǎn běn gēn jiù bǎn běn bǐ qǐ lái, duō le yì xiē gōng néng.
    Compared with the old version, the new version has a few more features.
