翼 is a bound form (b.f.) that appears in compounds and literary expressions. Its core meaning is 'wing' (as in 机翼 'aircraft wing' or 鸟翼 'bird wing'), extended to 'flank' (侧翼) in military or sports contexts. In classical Chinese it also carries the senses of 'to shelter/protect' (翼护) and 'to assist' (辅翼). Additionally, 翼 is the 27th of the 28 lunar mansions in traditional Chinese astronomy.
