糊涂 décrit un état d'esprit confus temporaire ou habituel — distrait, embrouillé, incapable de penser clairement. Contrairement à 笨 ou 愚蠢 (qui jugent l'intelligence d'une personne), 糊涂 indique un état mental confus et peut parfois être attendrissant ou feint (装糊涂).
