Verbs that take double objects

In Chinese, certain verbs like 给, 送, 告诉, and 问 can take two objects. The first object is the recipient (indirect object), and the second is the thing involved (direct object). Always put the indirect object before the direct object.

Structure

Subj. + Verb + Indirect Obj. + Direct Obj.

Examples

  • 老师,我可以你一个题吗?
    Lǎo shī, wǒ kě yǐ wèn nǐ yí gè wèn tí ma?
    Teacher, may I ask you a question?
  • 我想告诉你一个好消息。
    Wǒ xiǎng gào sù nǐ yí gè hǎo xiāo xi.
    I want to tell you the good news.
  • 他们了你多少钱?
    Tā men gěi le nǐ duō shǎo qián?
    How much money did they give you?
  • 我想送给你一本书。
    Wǒ xiǎng sòng gěi nǐ yì běn shū.
    I want to give you a book.
  • 你可以我两千块钱吗?
    Nǐ kě yǐ jiè wǒ liǎng qiān kuài qián ma?
